History

ISKCON NYC first relocated to 305 Schermerhorn St., Brooklyn in 1982. At that time extensive work was done by the devotees to make it suitable for Sri Sri Radha Govinda, the residents of the Ashram, and our growing community throughout the New York area.

In 2018, when on the request of the GBC Hansarupa das took on the service of Temple President, much needed maintenance began after being deferred for many years. Then in 2019, with the support of donors within our community and from around the world, we began the renovation effort, creating new spaces such as the Srila Prabhupada museum and the two Lotus room classrooms, as well as undertaking extensive renovations in the Ashram and other areas.

Although the pandemic slowed progress, the project is now ready to enter the next phases of transforming, expanding, and renewing Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir.

His Holiness Kadamba Kanana Swami Maharaj, played a particularly instrumental role in leading these efforts and we are committed to continuing the work he inspired.

Kadamba Kafe

Transformation of the current “shoe room” into an eco café—an exciting public space that will include outdoor seating and a revitalized sidewalk area.

Exterior Development

Installation of new doors , added windows, awnings, new signage, and decorative elements on the entire temple façade.

Balcony Space Renovation

Conversion of the balcony room into a multi-functional space, including the restoration of the original arch windows, creating a beautifully lit natural space.

Other Improvements

In addition to these major renovations the campaign includes:

  • Refreshing all other public spaces with new flooring, painting, and other improvements
  • Significant rehabilitating repairs to the existing building infrastructure, including plumbing and roofing

Cost and Timetable

The total cost of this first phase work is estimated at $500,000 and is projected to be complete by next year’s Hare Krishna Festival, June 2024. A detailed budget can be seen here
